Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett resigned Thursday, three days after news broke that he had changed the grade of a donor's charter school while Indiana's education chief.
Bennett's abrupt departure sparked criticism that his actions hurt the credibility of Florida's school-accountability system. Some called for reforms, while others praised Bennett and were sad to see him go.
"It's not fair to the children of Florida that I continue as commissioner and deal with the distraction," Bennett said during a press conference in Tallahassee. "I end my tenure with my head held high."

Bennett resigned after a whirlwind of controversy this week about his work in Indiana. He called the controversy "politically motivated" and said he resigned to spare Scott and state education leaders from distraction.
"Because I don't believe we should be distracted, I made a decision today," he said. "The decision to resign is mine and mine only."
Bennett blamed "malicious, unfounded reports out of Indiana" for forcing him from office. Reports based on Bennett's e-mails as Indiana superintendent began with an Associated Press story and have been followed with stories in the Indianapolis Star and other media.
Among the revelations — that Bennett directed staff to reconsider a new system of A to F grades after Christel House Academy, operated by a donor to his campaign, dropped from an A to a C.
Bennett is trying to blame others for his misfortune.
